Ah, the joys of having a nice, new, modern, clean apartment. It’s something you’ve strived for, and you’re proud of this luxury apartment you live in.
Then a child enters your apartment – you become a parent, or a family member, friend or other guest enters your home with their child – and suddenly, you realize your new apartment is not quite childproof for the baby or toddler moving about its floors.
Luckily, it’s easy to make important updates that childproof your home without disrupting your apartment’s aesthetic. Here are a few simple ways you can ensure the safety of babies, toddlers and young children is protected whenever they enter your door:
- Plug Those Outlets:
The electrical outlets along your walls are probably eye-level for the babies and toddlers crawling around your floors. These young children are often intrigued by outlets, especially when there is a fork or other slim object they can stick into the outlet.
Outlet plugs and covers are critically important to place in your unused outlets, as they eliminate the risk of electrical shocks and injury to your baby, along with damage to your wiring. These outlet plugs and covers, often white or transparent, are inexpensive and hardly noticeable when in use. You can find them in a variety of shapes and sizes to match the outlets in your home.
- Lock Up:
Doors and windows also pose safety hazards for young children in your apartment.
With regard to doors, you want to make sure that a toddler cannot open cabinets or doors that lead outside or to items like cleaning supplies that could endanger the health and safety of the child.
Windows that are not properly childproofed can be easy for a child to open, leaving them at risk for climbing out and falling. Windows at any height should be secured, as children can climb on couches, tables, shelves and other pieces of furniture to access windows that would otherwise seem out of reach for a small child.
There are a variety of door and window childproofing items that you can purchase to keep children safe. As many of these items are easily installed and uninstalled, you can even remove them in-between visits by your guests.
- Store Smartly: There are a number of items that can be very dangerous if swallowed by a small child, including everyday household items such as medicine, batteries and laundry detergent pods. We’ve already recommended locked cabinets and doors, but we also recommend that items such as these be stored on shelves high out of young children’s reach.
- Secure Furniture: Your luxury apartment might be filled with high-quality, modern and heavy furniture, such as widescreen TVs, bookshelves and full-length mirrors. It’s important, not only for small children but for pets as well, that these be secured to the walls behind them so that the furniture never tips over.
- Provide Options:
One of the best ways to keep a child out of harm’s way is to keep them busy with activities and toys that are made for them. By taking the precautions listed above (like blocking those outlets!) and giving your children options to fill their time, you’ll lessen the child’s curiosity to explore places within your apartment they should not be. Of course, a toy is not a babysitter – you always want to monitor where children are, and what they are doing.
Childproofing your luxury apartment is important, but simple solutions are available to make it easy and affordable. With these tips in mind, you’ll have a space that every guest will feel comfortable and safe in.Tweet
